Wildcats Shut Out Midland, Split Tuesday Home Non-Conference Tilt
BALDWIN CITY - After sweeping their home-opening series against Dakota Wesleyan on Sunday, the Baker baseball team hosted another set of non-conference games on Tuesday, splitting the day with a setback to Dakota State before coming out on top in the nightcap against Midland.
Game 1 - DSU 8, BU 1
The Trojans scored in every inning except the seventh, hitting a couple of home runs while keeping the Wildcats' bats at bay with BU only tallying three hits in the contest.
DSU used an RBI single in the first and a sac fly in the second to jump out to a 2-0 lead before BU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second.
After finding himself in a rundown at third on a stolen base attempt from pinch-runner Carson Adams, Jon Jenkins was able to maneuver out of it and slide under the tag at home to make it a 2-1 deficit for BU. Jenkins had one of the Wildcats' three hits, reaching on a flare single to center field.
The Trojans retook the lead with a run in the third and fourth innings before stretching the lead out to a seven-run advantage with a couple of two-run frames in the fifth and sixth.
Camden Karlin pitched a clean seventh inning, striking out a hitter in his second appearance of the season.
Game 2 - BU 1, MU 0
Will Isaly (4 IP), Trent Davidson (2.1 IP) and Gage Callaghan (0.2 IP) combined to notch Baker's second shutout in the past three days in a 1-0 victory over Midland.
Drawing his first start of the spring, Isaly, a transfer from Fort Hays State, tallied four strikeouts while tossing four straight scoreless innings. The only trouble he faced was in the third after the Warriors put runners at the corner with one out, but the right-hander was able to work out of it with a strikeout and a flyout.
The Wildcats manufactured the game's only run in the bottom of the third with Adams coming in to run for Karlin, who reached on a hit-by-pitch. Adams moved over to second on a walk from Brennan Johnson before stealing third and then racing home on a wild pitch to give Baker a 1-0 lead.
Davidson took over for Isaly in the fifth and cruised through the next couple of innings, getting a huge boost from the centerfielder Johnson who made an incredible grab at the warning track to end the fifth and prevent the game-tying run from coming across.
After Midland put a couple of runners on in the seventh, Callaghan came in and earned his second straight save, getting a couple of flyouts to seal the one-run victory for BU.
Baker will kick off Heart of America Conference play this weekend with a home series against Peru State on March 1-2 with both Saturday and Sunday's first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Sauder Field.
