Barrett's Career-High 30 Points Lifts Wildcats to Big Win Over (RV) Benedictine

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Continuing their hot streak in 2025, the Baker women's basketball team picked up a huge win on Wednesday, knocking off Benedictine who was tied for second place in the conference by a score of 81-73.

Just two days after she was named Heart of America Player of the Week, Sophia Barrett was unstoppable, scoring a career-high 30 points, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line and also pulling down five rebounds.

Three other Baker starters also reached double figures including Alyssa Morris (17), Taniya Tease (14) and Destiny Kiner (11), while Rihanna Blanchard also added nine points. Both Tease and Morris also led Baker on the boards with six rebounds each.

After Baker was able to nab an early 7-2 lead, the Ravens came back to take an 8-7 lead. Both teams traded baskets for a lot of the rest of the quarter, but with Baker trailing 15-13 with 3:36 to play, the Wildcats held Benedictine scoreless for the rest of the quarter. In that time, Baker went on a 10-0 run capped off by a buzzer beating three from Alyssa Morris to give Baker the 23-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Baker got off to a slow start in the second quarter, going without a field goal for the first six minutes as Benedictine fought their way back. Baker and Benedictine once again traded baskets, but a late foul called against Baker allowed Benedictine to tie the game at 32 heading into halftime.

Both teams battled hard throughout the third quarter, but with the score tied at 55 with just 43 seconds left in the third, a three from Morris followed by two free throws from Barrett gave Baker a five-point lead heading into the final quarter, 60-55.

On the first possession of the fourth quarter, Barrett stretched the lead to seven, then moved it to nine a minute later, 65-54. Benedictine would not go away, cutting the lead to just three points with 2:14 to play. Just as Baker has throughout the new year, the Wildcats pulled away once again and closed out the huge win over Benedictine, 81-73.

With the second straight win, the Wildcats are now 8-17 on the season and 7-16 in Heart of America play. They will finish off the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22nd, when they host William Penn at 12 p.m., inside the Collins Center for Senior Day.
