Early Second Half Goal Gives Wildcats 1-1 Tie vs. Mount Mercy

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After a slow first half for the Wildcats, the Baker women's soccer team picked up the intensity in the second half to record a 1-1 tie against Mount Mercy on Saturday evening.

Baker took a total of 10 shots in the game, with seven of those being on goal while Mount Mercy took 15 shots with 10 on goal. Both Darcy Cato and Emma Schieber combined for seven of the team's 10 shots. Avery Young played all 90 minutes in goal for Baker, making a total of nine saves to preserve the tie.

It didn't take long for Mount Mercy to get on the board as they took the early 1-0 lead just under eight minutes in, on their first shot of the game. Baker would hold the Mustangs scoreless for the rest of the half, but could not find the net on four shots as the game went to halftime with the Wildcats trailing 1-0.

Baker immediately came out with more intensity in the second half and capitalized just two minutes in to tie the game at one as Emeil Bennett scored on an assist form Emma Schieber.

The Wildcats would take five more shots throughout the rest of the second half, but could not break the tie as the game ended 1-1, giving the Wildcats their first tie of the season.

Baker is now 4-8-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Lamoni, Iowa, to take on Graceland at 5:00 p.m.
