Wildcats Earn Thrilling Last-Second Win Over KWU, Split Week Five Road Trip

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker women's flag football team scored a touchdown in the final 30 seconds of its midweek game at Kansas Wesleyan last week to earn a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Coyotes, 30-28 before going to split the road trip with an 18-0 loss at Midland on Sunday.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats battled with a tough KWU side that led for most of the game until BU stormed back in the fourth quarter with an 18-point rally in the final frame to claim the team's fourth straight victory.

Quarterback Sanija Waller threw for four touchdowns against the Coyotes, including the game-winning toss to Gabriella Zabaletta to give Baker a 30-28 lead with 19 seconds left. Waller ran for a touchdown towards the end of the first half to give the Wildcats a 12-7 lead, but KWU scored twice before halftime to take a 21-12 lead into the break.

Following a weather delay, the two teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter with both sides earning a fourth-down stop to keep things scoreless in the period. Then, in the fourth, the Wildcats picked up a couple of key stops defensively and scored three touchdowns to complete the comeback with Zabaletta's grab sealing the game at 30-28.

In Fremont, Neb. on Sunday, Baker took on the Warriors and were held scoreless for the first time all season. A quick first half saw the Wildcats only have three possessions which all resulted in punts.

After the Warriors scored twice in the second quarter, the BU defense held them scoreless for the final 22 minutes of the game, but the Wildcats couldn't capitalize offensively and fell on the road for the first time this season, 18-0.

Waller completed 15 passes against the Midland defense and added 32 yards rushing, while Destiny Martinez led the team with six catches for 57 yards.

Up next, the Wildcats continue their long road swing with a matchup at Saint Mary, tomorrow March 20 at 6 p.m. in Leavenworth, Kan.
