Coyotes Spoil Wildcats’ Return to Liston in Midweek KCAC Clash

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - After playing its last seven games on the road, Baker women's flag football dropped its first game back in Baldwin City as the Wildcats fell to Kansas Wesleyan, 32-13 here Wednesday night in a battle between two of the top-four teams in the KCAC.

With the Wildcats winning on a last-second touchdown in the first meeting in Salina, Kan., the Coyotes scored four times and held the BU offense scoreless in the first half to hand Baker just its second loss at Liston Stadium this season.

BU totaled 152 yards of offense with 117 of that coming through the air as Sanija Waller went 17-for-27 and accounted for both touchdowns. Destiny Martinez collected six catches for 38 yards, while Faith Phillips had the longest grab of the day with a 39-yarder in the fourth quarter.

KWU scored on its first four possessions of the game, but the Wildcats successfully defended all four extra-point attempts to trail 24-0 at the half.

In the second half, Baker scored its first touchdown after the defense picked up a fourth-down stop. Waller led a nice seven-play, 54-yard scoring drive that she capped by taking it in herself for her sixth rushing touchdown of conference play.

The Coyotes squashed any hopes of a late BU rally after scoring on their first drive of the fourth quarter to go up by 25 points.

After being stopped at the goal line by the KWU defense, Baker punched through on their last possession of the game to bring the final score to 32-13 in favor of the Coyotes.

As the only team to knock off the KCAC frontrunner this season, the Wildcats sit in fourth place with a 6-4 record in conference play after splitting the regular-season series with KWU, who boasts a league-best 10-1 record.

Baker will head back out on the road again this weekend to face off against Bethel in a conference matchup on Saturday, April 6 starting at 1 p.m. in Newton, Kan.
