Wildcats Earn 10th Win of Season with 22-6 Victory over Comets

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Baker women's flag football scored a pair of late touchdowns to outlast a gritty Cottey College team and earn the Wildcats' 10th win of their inaugural season with a 22-6 victory over the Comets here Monday night at Liston Stadium.

Playing at home for just the second time in the past 10 games, the Wildcats featured a balanced attack, offensively, and forced a couple of interceptions as well as some big fourth-down stops on the defensive end.

Sanija Waller racked up a season-high 132 rushing yards and accounted for all three of Baker's scores with two rushing touchdowns and an 11-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter.

With the two teams going scoreless in the opening period, the Wildcats broke the deadlock midway through the second quarter after a Kayla Harrison catch-and-run set BU up in Comets territory. Waller took off for a 24-yard scamper to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

Cottey scored on the following possession, but were stopped on the extra-point try as Baker went into the half holding on to just a one-point lead.

In the second half, the two teams traded turnovers to start with Faith Phillips picking off a pass for BU. It marked the team-leading fifth interception of the year for Phillips, a freshman from Irvington, N.J.

After Harrison recorded a fourth-down sack to give the ball back to the 'Cats, Waller capped off a six-play, 74-yard drive for Baker by hauling in a short toss from Gabriella Zabaletta and scoring to give the Wildcats some breathing room in the fourth quarter.

Waller garnished the home win with her second rushing touchdown of the game as Baker completed its second straight regular-season sweep of a KCAC opponent. The Wildcats defeated Bethel for the second time this season on Saturday with a 49-0 victory.

Harrison finished with three catches for 33 yards and earned two sacks as a BU rusher.

Baker wraps up the 2024 regular season with a home matchup against Southwestern on Saturday, April 13 at 11 a.m. in Baldwin City.
