Late Interception Seals Wildcats’ Big Road Win at KWU
SALINA, Kan. - An incredible diving interception by Kaley Phillips in the end zone with :30 seconds left sealed Baker women's flag football's 20-19 victory on the road at Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday to keep the Wildcats undefeated (4-0) in KCAC play this season.
With KWU driving, K. Phillips jumped a 3rd-and-goal pass for her fourth interception of the year and squashed the Coyotes' late rally after Baker took the lead with less than six minutes left in the game.
Prior to their defensive stand, Sanija Waller linked up with Jaylin Harris for a 13-yard touchdown pass to push the Wildcats in front by one with 5:43 left to play. Waller threw for another touchdown earlier in the game, finding fellow gunslinger Tara Llorente for a short score to give BU a 13-6 halftime lead.
After the Coyotes took a 6-0 lead, the Wildcats came right back and scored on the following possession with a couple of big chunk plays from Destiny Martinez (22 yards) and Faith Phillips (21 yards). Llorente capped the drive by firing a pass to K. Phillips for BU's first touchdown of the game and Waller tacked on the extra point to make it a 7-6 lead.
Llorente finished with 145 yards through the air and added 42 yards on the ground. K. Phillips was the leading target on the day with six catches for 42 yards, while Mahagonay Simmons hauled in five receptions for 37 yards.
A year after finishing third in its first run through the KCAC season, the Wildcats are off to a 4-0 start this season with three of their wins coming on the road.
Baker will return to Liston Stadium on Tuesday, March 18 to take on Ottawa with kickoff set for 6 p.m. in Baldwin City, Kan.
