Dines Claims Second at Verhille Invite, Men’s Golf Competes in Final Tune-Up Before Heart Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa - For the fourth straight tournament, Baker men's golf had a different player lead them in scoring with Gavin Dines earning runner-up honors as the Wildcats competed at the Verhille Invite this week in Iowa City, Iowa in BU's final tournament of the 2024 regular season.

The Wildcats finished fifth in the team standings with an overall score of 619, coming up a couple strokes shy of fourth-place St. Ambrose (617). Fellow Heart teams Park (598) and Mount Mercy (600) paced the 12-team field in Iowa.

Dines shot a 147 for the tournament to tie for second individually, using Wednesday's final round where he shot even par to boost him towards the top of the leaderboard. He became the fourth different Wildcat this spring to lead the team in scoring after teammates Drew Lisec, Ben Lemke and Gabe McKeown led BU in the previous three tournaments.

Lisec went one over par in his first round on Tuesday and finished with a 151 to land just outside the top-10 for an 11th-place outing. Cole Fischman had a solid start to his tournament as well with a 77 on day one before finishing tied for 45th.

McKeown and Lemke tied for 48th after finishing with matching scores of 164. Lemke tallied a 78 on Tuesday, while McKeown had his best round on Wednesday when he shot an 80.

Wrapping up the spring regular season, the Baker golf teams hop into postseason play now with the 2024 Heart of America Conference Golf Championships taking place over the next two weeks. Conference action gets underway with the women's championship on April 22-23 before the men compete the following week on April 29-30 with both tournaments being held at The Preserve at Lake Rathbun in Moravia, Iowa.
