Wildcats Rout Patriots, 13-0 in Season-Opening Match

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker men's soccer team racked up a whopping 13 goals to take a season-opening landslide victory over visiting Bible Baptist, 13-0 here Thursday night in Baldwin City.

"The guys that started the game for us set the tone early on and were able to move the ball at a good tempo," said head coach Nick Aguilar. "It was good to be able to share the wealth around and even when we made changes, the guys that came on did really well too. I think the most important thing though was getting the clean sheet, that's a testament to the team's focus and discipline."

Coming off of back-to-back first team all-conference seasons, junior forward Gyorgy Kamaras picked up right where he left off to tally four goals in the game while also adding two assists to mark a 10-point effort in his 2023 debut.

Kamaras was in good company on the scoring sheet as Hunter French bagged a hat trick of his own with a goal in the first half, followed by a pair of goals in the second half that were separated by just 77 seconds of action.

Six other Wildcats contributed to the offensive onslaught with Ernesto Hernandez, Sahal Arwo, Mo Salas, Dylan Traudt, James Henggeler and Ethan Hensyel each scoring a goal apiece. Salas also chipped in a couple of assists to match the game-high performances from Kamaras and Fin Gaywood.

Hernandez broke open the scoring in the sixth minute as he was able to fire home a ball played in from Kamaras to kickstart the rout. Later, Kamaras notched consecutive goals to give Baker a 4-0 advantage before Arwo's goal at the 39:22 mark capped the first-half scoring at 5-0.

Out of the intermission, Kamaras and French each recorded a couple goals to stretch the lead out to 9-0 before the 60th minute. Salas, Traudt and Henggeler followed with their second-half goals before Hensyel's goal in the 87th minute sealed the 13-0 win for the Wildcats.

Overall, Baker launched 36 shots in the match while holding the Patriots to just one shot which came in the first half. The Wildcats were able to get two of their goalies some early-season action as Michael Stoeger drew the start in goal and collected a save, while Giacomo Strasiotto came on in relief out of halftime to complete the shutout.

The Wildcats are right back at it on Saturday, Aug. 19 with McPherson coming to town for a non-conference match scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at Hartley Field.
