Kamaras’ Late-Game Equalizer Keeps Wildcats Unbeaten in 2023

LIMA, Ohio - Gyorgy Kamaras scored the game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of Baker's 1-1 draw against (RV) University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) to keep the Wildcats unbeaten on the season as they closed out the UNOH College Soccer Showcase here Saturday afternoon in Lima, Ohio.

With the result, the Wildcats move to 3-0-1 on the year and come away with four points on a tough first road trip which was highlighted by Thursday's win over No. 25 Northwestern Ohio.

Baker used a pressing second half to claw its way back and finish with a 13-12 advantage on shots and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks. Kamaras tallied eight shots in total in the match with four of those coming on target, including his late-game equalizer.

Despite the Wildcats holding the advantage in corner kicks, ironically it was the Patriots who were able to capitalize on their lone corner set piece of the first half. Cumberlands' entry ball found its way to freshman midfielder Emil Skursch and he was able to fire a rocket from outside the box to put Cumberlands up, 1-0 in the 7th minute.

The Wildcats tried to follow suit by picking up four corner kick chances in the first half, but couldn't convert on their opportunities. On the fourth corner kick, Fin Gaywood's ball created a double-header situation for the Wildcats where Kamaras was able to redirect a header that almost drew the match level.

After halftime, the Patriots continued to keep the Baker defense on its toes and forced a couple saves out of BU keeper Michael Stoeger in the first 15 minutes following the restart.

With the Wildcats attack pressing forward, Kamaras launched a couple of shots midway through the second half while Kaden Keller had a chance on a second ball off of a BU corner kick in the 77th minute, but his attempt missed high.

In the 81st, it was a Cumberlands miscue that led to Kamaras' goal after a handball was called on the Patriots keeper right outside the box. Taking the free kick, BU's junior forward was able to slice a ball through the Cumberlands wall and skip it past the keeper for his sixth goal of the season.

Coming off a sophomore campaign in which he totaled 12 goals, Kamaras has now scored in three of the first four games to start the year, including an impressive four-goal outing in the season-opener against Baptist Bible.

Up next, the Wildcats play host to a Labor Day tournament in Baldwin City and will face Morningside on Sept. 2 at 8 p.m., followed by a match versus Hastings on Sept. 4 at 11 a.m.
