Wildcats Fall for the First Time in Heart Play with 3-2 Setback Against Ravens

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Gyorgy Kamaras' brace wasn't enough to keep (RV) Baker men's soccer from its first setback of the Heart of America season as the Wildcats fell, 3-2 to Benedictine on Wednesday night in Baldwin City.

After going into halftime tied at 1-1, the two clubs came out of the break with an exciting stretch of action that featured three goals scored in the span of five minutes with the two Ravens goals serving as the bookends of the back-and-forth.

Kamaras recorded both of BU's goals in the match to give him 14 goals in his 2023 campaign. He had a game-high six shots with four of them landing on target, while teammate Hunter French tallied a shot on goal in the first half.

The Wildcats got to the scoreboard first after a BU corner kick that was initially cleared away ended up at the feet of Iwan Roberts, who was able to shimmy past a few defenders and set the ball off to Kamaras who fired in the game-opening goal.

Benedictine knotted the game with a goal in the 41st minute, sending the match to a 1-1 deadlock at the intermission.

The high-scoring second half began just six minutes after the restart with the Ravens converting on a penalty kick in the 51st minute to take a 2-1 lead.

Then, just a minute later, Kamaras earned a penalty after being tripped up in the box and he connected on his PK to draw the match level at 2-2. With the goal, Kamaras kept his perfect PK record intact as the junior forward is now 5-for-5 on penalty kicks this year.

The Ravens would cap the scoring stretch with a goal in the 55th minute coming from their senior midfielder Diego Acuna to put BC on top, 3-2.

Looking for an equalizer, Baker earned its fifth and final corner kick of the night in the 75th minute which led to a header by Kamaras that fell wide of goal.

The two goals by Kamaras marked his third outing this season with multiple goals in a game after recording a hat trick against Clarke and a four-goal performance against Baptist Bible in the season-opener. For Roberts, it was his first assist of the year after missing most of the early season due to injury.

After going unbeaten in its first four matches of Heart play, the Wildcats move to 3-1-1 against conference opponents, while sitting at 7-2-3 overall. They will be back in action this weekend with a road match at No. 20 Missouri Valley on Saturday, Oct. 7 with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
