Men’s Soccer Earns Senior Night Victory with 3-2 Win over Yellowjackets

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Wildcats forward Gyorgy Kamaras scored all three goals for his third hat trick of the year to lead Baker men's soccer to a 3-2 victory over Graceland on Saturday's Senior Night for BU.

Prior to the match, Baker honored 12 seniors for their contribution to the Wildcats men's soccer program. Those seniors included Jordan Barth, Ian Carroll, Axxel Chazaro-Lara, Hunter French, James Henggeler, Ernesto Hernandez, Ryan Johnson, TJ LibeerCristian Parada, Tony Salas and Christian Villegas.

Kamaras netted all three of Baker's goals in the match, including the game-winner in the 69th minute to give the Hungarian forward a total of 18 goals on the season. The Wildcats finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots and a 4-3 favor in corner kicks with the Yellowjackets drawing the match even on two separate occasions before Kamaras put the Wildcats on top for good.

It didn't take long for Baker to open the scoring with a foul by Graceland on the edge of the box leading to the game's opening goal. Kamaras took the free kick from atop the 18-yard box and hooked it past the Yellowjackets wall and into the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.

In the 13th minute, Graceland's Corrado Sguotti tied the game after a quick counter-attack led to the first of his two goals in the match.

Then, with halftime approaching, the Wildcats regained the lead after Kamaras was tripped up on his run inside the GU box and was awarded a penalty kick. Kamaras hammered home the ensuing PK to make him a perfect 7-for-7 on penalties this year.

With Baker leading 2-1 at the half, the Yellowjackets came right out of the break and drew the match level again with Sguotti's second goal making it a 2-2 ballgame in the 49th minute.

On the game's decisive goal, Kamaras received a ball from Fin Gaywood and put a shifty deke on the Yellowjackets keeper to give him an open net to fire in the game-winner and seal Baker's 3-2 conference win.

With 18 goals in 2023, Kamaras ranks third in the NAIA in goals this year, while his 12 goals against just conference opponents is one more than the Heart's next leading goal scorer for the season. Earning an assist on Kamaras' final goal, Gaywood is tied for the team lead with four assists this fall.

The Wildcats wrap up the 2023 regular season with a pair of road matches this week, starting with a matchup at No. 22 MidAmerica Nazarene on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. in Olathe, Kan.
