Baker Tennis Competes Well at ITA Regional Over the Weekend

WINFIELD, Kan. – This past weekend the Baker tennis teams traveled to Winfield, Kan., to compete in the ITA Central-West Regional where both teams competed hard early in the season.

"Going into the Regional ITA, we knew what to expect in our opponents and I am very pleased with how we competed in tough moments throughout the entirety of the tournament," head coach Michael Trujillo said. "Even though we didn't finish as a team how we wanted, each individual showed significant improvement and we are confident with our level of play moving forward."

On the women's side, Patricia Moore, Josephine Moore, Carolina Porto-Ferraz and Chassidy Weathers all lost their first matches of the day, sending them to the consolation bracket. All four battled hard in their second match of the tournament, but were not able to come away with wins.

Cortlyn Wolfe won her first two matches of the tournament, including a huge win over the No. 9 seeded player in the tournament to reach the round of 16. Wolfe then lost two a very tough opponent to end the tournament in singles.

After a loss to start doubles for Josephine and Patricia Moore, the two bounced back and got a big win in the consolation bracket. Carolina Porto-Ferraz and Cortlyn Wolfe won their first matchup in doubles and lost in the second round to the No. 3 seed in a very close match.

On the men's side, Alejandro Hernandez-Carreno receive the No. 8 seed, while Davis Steadman, Max Hovorka and Kyler Kosanke faced off with top seeded players. After losses by Steadman, Hovorka and Kosanke, Steadman and Kosanke lost their consolation match to end singles.

Hovorka was able to win his first consolation round match, but fell in the second round to end singles for him. Alejandro Hernandez-Carreno moved onto the quarterfinals without dropping a set, but was forced to face the No. 1 seed, where he fell, 7-6 (1) 1-6.

In doubles, Hernandez-Carreno and Steadman won their first round in a tight match to advance to the second round, but eventually lost to the No. 4 seed, ending the tournament for Baker.

The Baker tennis teams will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 23, when they host Tabor College at approximately, 12 p.m.
