Wildcats Walk It Off In Game Two to Sweep Cottey College

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Extending their winning streak to eight games, the Baker softball team swept Cottey College on Friday evening, winning game one, 4-0 and walking off in game two with a three-run home run, 3-0, in eight innings.

Kira Baker took the circle in game one, throwing all seven innings and allowing just four hits while collecting a total of 10 strikeouts. Offensively, the Wildcats had six total hits in the game, with both Savannah Bray and Riley Phillips picking up two hits as Phillips drove in three of the team's four runs.

To lead off the second inning, Ashlee Jackman was hit by a pitch, then Rylee Seymour crushed a double to the wall in left-center that scored Jackman from first and Baker gained a 1-0 lead early in the game.

In the third inning, a one-out double from Bray got things going and then a two-out triple from Phillips added to the lead and scored Bray to extend Baker's lead to 2-0. The Wildcats then put the game away in the bottom of the fifth as Phillips drove in two more runs, this time on a single up the middle as Baker took game one of the doubleheader, 4-0.

Breana Barchak was the starting pitcher in game two, pitching six strong innings where she gave up just five hits and struck out five. Kira Baker pitched the final two innings of the game and received her second win of the day. Again, the Wildcats had six hits as a team with Rilee Bell going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Madi Ball had two hits herself.

Both sides made some great plays on defense throughout the game and after seven full innings, the game remained tied at zero. With the international tiebreaker in effect putting a runner on second to start the inning, Baker quickly had runners at second and third with no out. Bell then stepped to the plate and crushed a ball to deep left field that left the park and gave the Wildcats the 3-0 walkoff win and sealing the sweep of Cottey College.

The Wildcats are now 15-5 on the season. They will be back in action on March 23, when they host Culver-Stockton at 1:00 p.m., at Cavaness Field, to begin Heart of America play.
