SHAWNEE, Kan. - In its final non-conference tournament of the spring, Baker softball rattled off four straight wins to go a perfect 4-0 at the Top Gun Invite this past weekend, held at the Mid-America Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kan.
The Wildcats came away with back-to-back shutouts on Saturday in their first set of games with a 1-0 victory over Kansas Wesleyan, followed by a 3-0 blanking of Concordia. On Sunday, BU exploded for an 11-4 blowout over Waldorf before finishing off the weekend with a 6-2 win over Briar Cliff.
BU 1, KWU 0
Baker came out on top of a pitcher's duel in the tournament opener against the Coyotes with Tess Eubank recording her first shutout of the season.
Eubank struck out seven, gave up only four hits and allowed only one KWU runner to reach third base, which didn't come until the game's final out.
Savannah Bray drove in the lone run of the contest with a double in the first inning. She knocked in Ava Greiner who reached on a leadoff single.
After that, it was six scoreless frames the rest of the way as Eubank worked around an error on the leadoff batter in the seventh and induced a couple of groundouts to preserve the 1-0 victory
BU 3, CUNE 0
Kira Baker followed up her bullpen mate Eubank with a scoreless gem of her own, tallying six strikeouts to also record her first shutout in 2025.
Concordia was only able to scratch three hits against K. Baker while Riley Phillips drove in two of the three runs for BU.
Phillips came through with a two-out single to score Rachel Pederson in the top of the fourth to break up the 0-0 tie before tacking on another RBI as part of the Wildcats' two-run sixth inning. Pederson came around to score in the sixth as well, this time on an infield single off the bat of Madi Ball.
BU 11, WU 4
The Wildcats' offense started to come alive in the final day of action on Sunday, rolling out to an 11-4 victory over the Warriors in the first game.
Bray and Braxton Stainbrook each registered three RBI with Bray notching the first two runs of the game with a single in the bottom of the first and Stainbrook smacking her second home run of the season with a three-run shot in the sixth.
Ball followed up Bray's scoring in the first with an RBI double to spot BU starter Madalyn Cole a 3-0 lead. The Warriors scored a pair of runs in both the second and fourth innings to take a one-run lead before Bray tied things up with another RBI knock in the home half of the fourth.
Ashlee Jackman put the Wildcats back in front after racing home on a double steal between her and Phillips. A five-run sixth inning turned the back-and-forth battle into a cozy seven-run victory for BU with Stainbrook's home run delivering the final blow.
BU 6, BCU 2
In the final game of the weekend, the Wildcats got a couple of timely hits from Ball and Sydney Erlandson and had pitchers Baker and Brooke Vicory hold the Chargers to two runs.
Vicory had five strikeouts in five innings to earn the win in her first start of the season, while K. Baker sealed the game with two scoreless innings of relief.
Ball opened the scoring in the first frame with a two-run single and Erlandson scratched across two more runs in the second with another two RBI hit. After the Chargers scored a pair of runs in the fifth, Ball garnished the tournament with a solo home run in the seventh to complete a 4-0 outing for the Wildcats.
With the projected forecast shifting its home series this week, Baker moved up its doubleheader against Morningside from Wednesday to Monday with the non-conference matchup set for a 4 p.m. first pitch later today out at Cavaness Field.
The Wildcats will turn around and host another non-con doubleheader with games against Missouri Baptist, now scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on Tuesday, March 4 in Baldwin City.
