Baker Drops Final Home Game of 2023 to Mount Mercy, 78-52

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In their final home game of 2023, the Baker women's basketball team fell to Mount Mercy on Saturday afternoon, 78-52.

Going 5-for-10 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line, Leah Van Weelden led the team in scoring putting up 17 points which was just one point shy of tying her season-high. Emma Cunningham picked up her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points with 10 rebounds, while Jaelyn Two Hearts added 12 points.

Baker was able to grab and early lead in the first quarter and it wasn't until just under three minutes to play in the quarter that the Mustangs were able to take an 11-10 lead as Baker went scoreless for the final four minutes of the quarter.

The field goal drought continued into the second quarter as Baker was not able to pick up a field goal until the 2:56 mark of the second quarter. Meanwhile, Mount Mercy had stretched their lead to 35-14 and eventually took a 35-19 lead into halftime.

Baker battled throughout the third quarter but a strong fourth quarter from Mount Mercy continued to add to their lead as the Wildcats lost to Mount Mercy, 78-52.

Baker is now 1-12 on the season and 1-8 in Heart of America play. They will be finish off 2023 with a road matchup against Benedictine on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 5:30 p.m. After a short break, the Baker women's basketball team will also take on Rockhurst in an exhibition game on Dec. 30th at 1:00 p.m., in Kansas City, Mo.
