Wildcats Drop Tough Overtime Game to William Penn, 73-70

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Nearing the end of the regular season, the Baker women's basketball team dropped their first overtime game of the season on Saturday, falling to William Penn, 73-70.

Four of Baker's starters reached double figures in the game as Emma Cunningham led the team with 16 points. Alyssa Morris, Jaelyn Two Hearts and Leah Van Weelden also scored at least 13 points as they added 15, 14 and 13 respectively. Morris also pulled down a team high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Wildcats held William Penn scoreless for almost four minutes in the first quarter as they took an early 8-0 lead, but the Statesmen then went on a 12-0 run of their own over the next three minutes to lead 12-8. Baker would hit two more threes in the first quarter but WPU would take a 17-14 lead into the second quarter.

Back-to-back threes from Morris and Van Weelden gave Baker a 20-18 lead early in the quarter, but again the Statesmen went on a run and led by as much as 10 points before holding a 38-32 lead at halftime.

Baker wouldn't go down without a fight on Saturday and cut the lead to 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter. The Statesmen stretched their lead to 10 again in the final quarter, but Baker came roaring back and with 19 seconds to go, Van Weelden hit a layup to tie the game at 62 and send the game to overtime.

Despite holding the Statesmen to just two field goals in the overtime period, a three from Baker in the final seconds came up short and the Wildcats fell to William Penn in overtime, 73-70.

Baker is now 3-22 on the season and 3-18 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action this next Wednesday as they travel up the road to Olathe, Kan., to take on MidAmerica Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
