Wildcats Blow by Falcons, 88-34 in Season-Opening Rout
BALDWIN CITY - Baker women's basketball posted its highest-scoring outing since the 2021-22 season opener with an 88-34 stomping of Kansas Christian on Monday in the Collins Center in BU's first game of the 2024-25 season.
The Wildcats scored nearly 20 points in every quarter and limited the Falcons to single digits in two of the periods, including a mere five points in the second. BU's defense held KCC to shoot less than 20 percent from the field (11-for-56) and forced 34 turnovers.
Returning five players from last year's squad, Baker was led by seniors Alyssa Morris and Sophia Barrett with Morris having an all-around night on a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Barrett had an efficient 6-for-8 shooting to finish with 14 points, while fellow returner Maggie Myers chipped in 11 points.
Morris registered eight of her 21 points in the first quarter to help push the Wildcats out to a 23-11 lead by the end of the frame. Barrett and Harley Baker each had five points with Barrett converting a three-point play early on in the game.
The Wildcats held the Falcons to go scoreless from the field in the second period with all five of KCC's points coming from the foul line. Meanwhile, Myers and Taniya Tease accounted for half of BU's scoring with Tease capping the 45-point half with a couple of free throws as Baker took a 45-16 lead into halftime.
Back-to-back threes from Morris and Barrett, followed by one from Myers a little bit later kicked off the second half for the Wildcats. Hallie Smires knocked down a couple of jump shots to give Baker a 36-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Wildcats closed out the season opener with their highest-scoring quarter yet with 24 points in the fourth to finish off the blowout, 88-34.
BU will head out for its first road contest with a matchup at Ottawa on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
