BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker women's basketball team earned its second straight home win with a 79-70 victory over Culver-Stockton on Saturday afternoon in the Collins Center.
BU put together another energetic performance in front of the home crowd, scoring at least 19 points in three quarters and holding C-SC to an 11-point second quarter to pick up its second conference win of 2025.
Sophia Barrett was one of two BU players to score over 20 points, finishing with a team-high 23 points and adding four rebounds and four steals to her day. Destiny Kiner posted her second straight 20-point game and Alyssa Morris followed right behind with 19 points and seven boards.
Culver-Stockton, who hit a total of 10 threes in the game, used a couple of triples to jump out to a 14-6 lead in the opening quarter. Morris responded by knocking down the first of three straight threes from Baker's end of the court with Kiner's back-to-back treys pulling BU within three.
With C-SC holding a slight 21-20 advantage after the first quartrer, a couple of driving layups from Barrett gave Baker its first lead of the game early in the second period.
From there, Baker clamped down defensively with Culver-Stockton's bucket at the 6:15 mark going as the last field goal of the half for the visitors. Meanwhile, BU closed out on a 15-6 run with Morris scoring nine points during the stretch, including a three to make it a double-digit lead before C-SC cut the halftime score to 39-32.
Morris started off the second half with another three and a three-point play from Barrett gave Baker an 11-point advantage. Culver-Stockton connected on a couple of threes to pull within one, but a three by Barrett halted the momentum swing.
Each side traded punches for the rest of the third quarter with Kiner and Rihanna Blanchard getting to the hoop for a couple of layups. Barrett wiped out a C-SC three with her second trey of the frame and Kiner beat the buzzer to give Baker a 63-55 lead going into the final quarter.
BU kept a quick C-SC three from escalating into a rally starter and worked the lead back out to double digits in the early parts of the fourth quarter before Culver-Stockton battled back to make it a five-point game with three minutes left to play.
Taniya Tease came up with a clutch offensive put-back which served as the final field goal of the game as C-SC missed its last four shots down the stretch and Baker held on to secure a 79-70 win.
Winners of two of their last three games, Baker will have a quick turnaround for its makeup road trip to William Penn, facing the Statesmen on Monday, January 20 at 1 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa
