Wildcats Earn Three Top-Five Finishes at Bethany College Classic

NEWTON, Kan. - After the women's squad competed in Hesston last week, both Baker golf teams returned to central Kansas for the Bethany College Classic where the Wildcats came away with a pair of fourth-place finishes.

With the tournament being held at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, the BU men knocked off a few strokes from round one to total a score of 595 and finish in fourth place among the 11-team field.

Gabe McKeown tied for fourth after shooting one over par for the tournament, kicking things off with a 70 in Monday's opening round. He becomes the third different Wildcat this spring to pace a well-rounded men's team that is coming off a team title from the Park Invite in late March.

Shooting a 73 in his final round, Gavin Dines earned a top-15 finish on a score of 149, while teammate Drew Lisec marked one more stroke with a 150 to follow in 18th. Cole Fischman (154) and Ben Lemke (156) rounded out the scoring for BU.

After earning runner-up honors at last week's Tabor Invite, the Baker women tallied a score of 330 in the first round and 336 in the second to secure their fourth-place spot.

Paula Martin-Montero claimed her second third-place finish of the spring with a two-day total of 156 and Reagan Kauth came in one spot behind, tying for fourth on a score of 160. Martin-Montero was honored as this week's Heart Women's Golfer of the Week after placing second at the Tabor Invite.

Mallory Nelson shot an 84 on day one and finished with a 172, while Katie Murray recorded a 178 and tied for 26th overall. Gracyn Nutsch marked a score of 188 to close things out for a BU women's team that played in its final tune-up before the conference meet.

The Baker men will head out for their final regular-season competition with the Verhille Invite on April 16-17 at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.

Both teams will compete at the Heart Men's and Women's Golf Championships later this month with the women's competition being held on April 22-23 and the men's on April 29-30 at The Preserve at Lake Rathbun in Moravia, Iowa.
