Wildcats Earn Runner-Up Finish, Gilbert Named Co-Coach of the Year at 2025 Heart Championship
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Marking the team's highest finish in 10 years, the Baker women's golf team took second place at the 2025 Heart Women's Golf Championship, which was held at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate in Overland Park, Kan. on Monday and Tuesday.
The Wildcats shot a combined 991 for the tournament, finishing 11 strokes behind William Penn (980), who won the conference championship, and five strokes ahead of third-place Park (996). BU started off the week by turning in a tournament-best 319 in Monday's opening round.
Reagan Kauth (+23) placed third, individually, with her best round coming in the second round where she shot a 77. The sophomore from Overland Park had one of the biggest highlights of the tournament, hitting a hole-in-one on hole No. 8 during the final round on Tuesday.
Paula Martin-Montero (+32) and Izabelle Backstrom (+39) joined Kauth as the three Wildcats to earn all-conference honors with Martin-Montero taking ninth and Backstrom finishing in 14th. Martin-Montero marked the best round for any golfer throughout the two-day event after shooting even par in her first round of 18. Backstrom stayed consistent through her run with consecutive scores of 84, 85 and 86.
Ally Laverty (+42) rounded out the top-15 in her first Heart tournament with an impressive second round that saw her shoot a 79. Madison Zubeck (+45) posted an 81 in her opening round and finished 20th overall with a final tally of 261.
Additionally, Baker head coach Chris Gilbert was named Heart Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to their best finish at conference since winning three straight league titles from 2013-2015.
Baker closes the books on a 2025 spring season that saw them come away with one tournament title and a couple of runner-up finishes. BU broke the program's 54-hole record while winning the Hesston Spring Shootout back in early April and came in second in the Baker Invitational in the spring opener.
