Wildcats Fall to No. 9 Central Methodist, 4-0 on the Road

FAYETTE, Mo. – Facing their second straight ranked opponent, the Baker women's soccer team fell to No. 9 Central Methodist by a score of 4-0 on Wednesday night in Fayette, Mo. in its first match of the Heart of America Athletic Conference season.

The Eagles scored a pair of goals in each half and shut out a Wildcats squad that had six of their seven shots in the match come in the second half of play. Baker held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, but the CMU attack peppered 22 shots throughout the contest with four of them finding the back of the net.

"We will keep our heads up and keep pushing," said Baker head coach Sara Matthews. "Our tough non-conference scheduled prepared us for our challenging conference that opened tonight with a perennial top-10 team. We showed we can create good opportunities, whether it's a shot or a corner. The difference tonight was not capitalizing offensively and giving up four defensively off moments."

Aubree Koren tallied four shots for the Wildcats with three of those coming on target, while Bella Wiles and Lydia Brinker each had a shot land on goal as well.

It was early into the match that CMU was able to open up the scoring, tallying a goal in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest. The Eagles added their second goal on a penalty kick to make it 2-0 midway through the opening half.

The Wildcats created a few scoring chances early in the second half with Koren sending a header towards goal in the 59th minute, while Brinker put the CMU to work again a few minutes later on her attempt. Baker earned back-to-back corner kicks following Brinker's action with Koren putting up another header that was saved.

In the 69th minute, the Eagles increased their lead on a goal by their freshman forward Paula Castro before going on to tack on their fourth goal in the final five minutes to take a 4-0 result over Baker.

"We were dangerous and locked in for most of the match tonight," added Matthews. "Moving forward though, we have to put together a full 90 minutes in order to be successful."

Baker continues with its conference slate with a Homecoming matchup against Clarke on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. at Hartley Field in Baldwin City.
