Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw on the Road at Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. – Playing in the nightcap of the soccer doubleheader, Baker women's soccer earned a point on the road after ending in a scoreless tie with Heart of America opponent Culver-Stockton on Saturday night in Canton, Mo.

Baker carried a slight advantage in the shot column with a 10-9 favor while Culver-Stockton held a 5-3 margin in corner kicks. BU keeper Jorja Martin earned her first clean sheet of the season after tallying four saves in the shutout.

The BU attack featured seven different players registering a shot in the match with Caitlin Youles, Cate Nearmyer and Aubree Koren each having one come on goal.

After C-SC recorded three shots within the first four minutes of the game, the Baker defense held the home-sided Wildcats to just one shot for the remainder of the first half.

Midway through the first half, a BU corner kick taken by Youles almost resulted in a goal with a bouncing header from Koren rolling off the top of the crossbar. The ball eventually found its way to Youles again, who fired off a shot that nearly fell out of the hands of the C-SC keeper.

In the second half, Culver-Stockton came out of the break with back-to-back corner kicks and a couple of shots, including one that Martin was able to corral.

Koren had another look at goal in the 56th minute as the senior defender found herself with some space and fired off a long-distance shot that was hauled in by the goalie.

BU would get the final scoring opportunity of the match after earning a corner kick in the final minute, but Youles' swinging entry went a little too high and out for a goal kick as the conference battle ended in a scoreless draw.

Earning a point for the second straight match, Baker will now turn its attention to a midweek conference matchup with (RV) Benedictine as the two Heart teams will face off against each other on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. at Hartley Field in Baldwin City.
