Wildcats Battle Tough with (RV) Benedictine, Fall 1-0 in Midweek Match

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Moving into the midway point of the conference season, Baker women's soccer fell to (RV) Benedictine, 1-0 in a Heart of America match held at Hartley Field on Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first half, the Ravens netted a goal in the 71st minute to defeat a Wildcats team that was previously unbeaten in its last two matches.

Benedictine recorded 25 shots and earned 13 corner kicks in the match, while the Baker offense had its hands full going up against a Ravens defense that hadn't surrendered a goal in five straight matches. The Wildcats tallied two shots in the match, but both of them came on goal with strikes from Emma Schieber and Cate Nearmyer.

Along with the BU backline, Baker's keeper Jorja Martin repelled the Ravens for most of the match with Martin finishing the game with eight saves.

In the first half, the Wildcats earned their two corner kicks of the match in a five-minute stretch with the latter set piece resulting in a long-distance shot by Schieber.

With the intensity picking up in the second half, the Ravens were able to score the game-winner following a BU penalty just outside its box. BC's Hannah Phillips took the ensuing free kick and was able to slice it through for the lone goal of the match.

Up next, the Wildcats will travel to Marshall, Mo. for a weekend match against Missouri Valley on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
