Wildcats Fall to Ravens, 3-1 in Tuesday Night Tussle

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker volleyball sparked a rally in the third set to take conference rival Benedictine to four sets, but fell to the Ravens, 3-1 on Tuesday night in Baldwin City.

The Ravens claimed the first two sets on scores of 25-19 and 25-19 before the Wildcats battled back to steal the third set, 25-23. BC would go on to win the match in the fourth on a score of 25-15.

Kennedy Bryan led the BU attack with 12 kills, while Nellie LaFountain added nine kills with a couple of blocks as well. Emma Grossoehme tallied 26 assists to give the Baldwin High product her fourth straight match with at least 20 assists.

After Benedictine got out to an early lead in the opening set, the Wildcats fought their way back to get within three and then went on to score six unanswered points to take a 13-12 lead on a kill by Kylie Murray. The Ravens would retake the lead and use three straight successful attacks to set up an ace on set point to win the frame.

Set two featured the Wildcats keeping it close for most of the period, cutting the deficit to two points on an ace by Reese Kehl and then again on a kill by LaFountain. With the score 22-18, the Ravens earned three of the set's final four points to match its win from set one, 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead in the game.

Trailing by four midway through the third set, Baker started to mount its comeback with an ace by Murray making it 18-15 in favor of BC. The Wildcats would then rattle off a 9-2 run with three kills from Bryan igniting the spurt, including her final attack that forced a fourth set with BU winning the third, 25-23.

In the fourth set, Benedictine cooled off the BU momentum by running up an early 7-2 lead before Bryan put the Wildcats within one at 9-8 on another attack. The Ravens took off from there, stretching their lead out to double digits before winning the set, 25-15 to claim the conference match, 3-1.

Up next, the Wildcats head out for a top-25 matchup with a match at No. 8 Park set for Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in Parkville, Mo.
