Wildcats Fall to Eighth-Ranked Pirates, 3-0 in Friday Night Match

PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Baker volleyball team took on No. 8 Park on Friday night in Parkville, Mo. and fell to the Pirates in three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-21.

Kierra Hipple led the Wildcats with five kills on the night, while Emma Grossoehme had 10 total assists in the match. Reese Kehl had a strong day defensively, picking up seven digs, while also adding four assists.

After falling behind 8-2 in the opening set, Baker cut it to a 10-6 ballgame with a kill by Kennedy Bryan. Later on in the set, Park stretched its lead out to double digits before closing out the frame with a 6-1 run to win the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Park continued its hot start in the second set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead and then scoring eight unanswered to go up 17-4. The Pirates went on to claim the second set, 25-9 to hold a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Wildcats used a couple of kills by Olivia Deichmann and Brie Reedy to fuel a 5-2 run for BU to open the set. Baker would hold its lead with an ace by Grossoehme making it 9-8 in favor of the Wildcats before Park pulled ahead with a couple of key scoring stretches. Trailing 19-14, Baker tied the set at 20-20 on another kill by Reedy, but the Pirates took five of the final six points to win the match and earn the conference sweep.

Baker is now 6-10 on the year and 1-5 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when they host conference opponent Missouri Valley at 7 p.m., inside the Collins Center.
