Wildcats Fall to No. 22 Central Methodist, 3-0

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Coming off back-to-back wins from this past weekend, the Baker volleyball team fell to No. 22 Central Methodist on Tuesday night in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16.

Adelyn Bybee led the Wildcats with a team-high five kills, hitting .231 for the match. Kierstyn Harmon tallied 11 assists to go along with a couple of aces, while Reese Kehl collected 14 digs to bring her season total up to 317 digs.

After the Eagles jumped out to an early lead, Baker used consecutive kills by Bybee to even the set at 9-9. Bybee, a freshman from Grain Valley, Mo., registered all five of her kills of the match in the opening frame. CMU started to pull away midway through the set and used a 9-0 run to build a double-digit lead, eventually winning the first set, 25-15.

The Wildcats continued to battle in the second set, capitalizing on a few CMU errors to hold a 5-1 advantage in the early going. After the Eagles retook the lead, Meredith Brown connected on consecutive attacks to keep BU within one. With the score 22-14 in favor of the visitors, Baker sparked a late rally to make it a five-point game before CMU claimed the second on a 25-18 score.

Baker started out in front in the third set as well with a couple of kills by Olivia Deichmann and Kierra Hipple fueling an early 4-1 lead for BU. The Eagles would climb back and go on a 6-0 run to lead 12-5, but a couple more kills by Hipple and an ace by Grace Wood brought the Wildcats within four at 16-12. CMU maintained its lead though and closed out its conference sweep with a 25-16 win in the final set.

With Tuesday's result, the Wildcats move to 8-12 on the year and close out a three-match homestand that saw them go 2-1 with wins against Peru State (Oct. 6) and Graceland (Oct. 7).

The Wildcats head out for an Iowa road trip with matches at Mount Mercy and Clarke this weekend. Baker takes on the Mustangs on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, before going to Dubuque to face Clarke on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 12 p.m.
