Women’s Wrestling Sweeps Duals at Midland, Competes at Doane Open

CRETE/FREMONT, Neb. – The Baker women's wrestling completed a busy weekend in Nebraska after winning both of its duals at Midland on Friday before closing out with five top-six finishes at Saturday's Doane Open.

To begin the weekend, the 19th-ranked Wildcats defeated Southeast CC, 38-11 and Midland, 31-18 to earn a sweep in their second set of duals of the 2023-24 season.

Baker claimed eight of the 10 matches against the Bobcats with a total of five pins and two tech falls to start its night off with a comfortable 38-11 win. The nightcap featured a closer battle between the Wildcats and Warriors as Baker used a string of four falls to take a 21-9 lead midway through the match before Midland won the final two bouts to close out a 31-18 victory for BU.

Competing in Crete, Neb. on Saturday, the Wildcats had five wrestlers earn placement finishes with Katherine Heath's third-place finish highlighting the tournament.

Heath, a senior from Fairview, Texas, went 5-1 in her matches in the 116-pound division with three victories by tech fall, including a 10-0 win in the consolation semifinals to secure her spot in the third-place bout.

Belle Hernandez placed fourth at 130 pounds after winning three of her matches on the day. She tallied a quick pin in her match in the consolation semifinals before falling in the placement match.

Jannell Avila added a fifth-place showing for the Wildcats in the 191-pound bracket, winning four straight matches at one point before finishing off her tournament with a pin in a tough fifth-place match.

Abbie Jones and Kylee Slyter each finished in sixth in their respective divisions with Jones going 4-2 in her matches at 136 pounds and Slyter winning three of her first four matches to place sixth at 109 pounds.

The Wildcats host their first dual of the season as they take on No. 3 Grand View on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. inside the Collins Center in Baldwin City, Kan.
