
Women’s Wrestling Earns Three Top-Four Finishes at Doane Open
CRETE, Neb. - The Baker women's wrestling team came away with a trio of placement finishes at the 2024 Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday with Katherine Heath (117) and Nevaeh Wardlow (180) each earning runner-up honors.
Overall, the Wildcats finished with 49 wins at the single-day tournament that featured 400 wrestlers and 32 teams.
Heath went 5-1 in her trek through the 117-pound bracket with four of her wins coming on tech falls after a pin in her first bout of the day. Wardlow won four straight matches to begin her outing at 180 pounds, including a pin 23 seconds into her semifinal match, before falling in the championship match.
Jaclyn Daley placed fourth at 160 pounds after totaling four wins for the tournament. She won by pin in her first match and added a decision win in the quarterfinal to earn her first placement finish this season.
Kylie Robledo (124) and McKenna Haltom (145) each finished in the top eight of their respective divisions with Robledo making it all the way to the semifinal match before bowing out the rest of the tournament with an injury. Robledo defeated the NAIA's fourth-ranked wrestler with an 8-3 decision, while Haltom won all three of her matches by decision, including a top-25 victory to reach the seventh round of the consolation bracket.
The Wildcats had three other wrestlers also total at least three wins in Nebraska with Maliyah Lopez (103), Mariam Shariq (117) and Hailee Crosland (145) putting together solid performances. Lopez pinned three straight opponents in the 103-pound bracket, Shariq had two of her wins come by tech fall and Crosland earned a pin to advance to the sixth round of the consolation bracket at 145 pounds.
Up next, Baker will close out the calendar year by competing at the Soldier Salute on Dec. 29-30 in Coralville, Iowa. Wrestling begins on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m.
